Schalkwyk joins PSL newcomers

GladAfrica Championship

GladAfrica Championship new boys Hungry Lions have begun their preparations for the new season by roping in former Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates star Gert Schalkwyk.

Schalkwyk will take a seat at Lions as assistant coach to Henry Basie as they shape up for the challenge of competing in the country’s second-tier league in 2021/22.

The retired attacking midfielder was previously involved with ABC Motsepe League club Stilfontein Real Hearts but will now move up to provide a helping hand on the bench at Lions.

The 39-year-old has a wealth of experience from his playing days, having started his PSL career at Free State Stars before featuring for Wits University, Chiefs, Bloemfontein Celtic, Pirates, Maritzburg United, Golden Arrows and Santos.

He also played for Lions in the ABC Motsepe League towards the end of his playing career four years ago.

Former Celtic winger Moses Spandeel, 41, will remain at the club to also take up a role as an assistant after hanging his boots at the end of last season.

Lions will further retain the services of former Mpumalanga Black Aces right-back Rudiger Gilbert.

The team have in the past two weeks conducted trials and started their pre-season proper this week at their base in Postmasburg.

With their home ground in Postmasburg not meeting PSL standards, they will play their home games in Kathu where the stadium has been approved.

The club has confirmed all these developments.
