Mekoa lands new club after 7 months

GladAfrica Championship

Former South Africa Olympic star Deolin Mekoa has resurfaced in the GladAfrica Championship after seven months without a club.

Mekoa, 27, looked destined for stardom in South African football when he rejected a lucrative offer from Mamelodi Sundowns but has endured a dramatic fall from grace since.

In January 2020 he fell out of favour at Maritzburg United where he developed into one of the most sought-after talents in the PSL and was sent out on loan to the now-defunct Ajax Cape Town.

Upon his return to KZN, the talented winger was released from his contract and after seven months in search of a new club, second-tier strugglers Bizana Pondo Chiefs have offered him a career lifeline.

Newly-appointed head coach Clinton Larsen has secured Mekoa and former Cape Town City midfielder Shaquille Abrahams on short-term deals until the end of the current season.

"We are happy at the arrival of both players, Shaquille Abrahams and Deolin Mekoa, they arrive at a time where we are facing difficulties as a club. We are confident they will fit seamlessly into our team and help as win the remaining matches of the season," Chairman Nkosanathi Mqokinyana.

Mekoa and Abrahams bring the experience of over 150 top-flight appearances combined to aid Pondo Chiefs' battle to avoid relegation to the ABC Motsepe League.
