Mamelodi Sundowns captain Hlompho Kekana says it’s important for a former teammate of his to get game time with the senior national team in the COSAFA Cup.
Former Sundowns winger Keagan Dolly, at his own request, requested to be part of the COSAFA Cup squad so that he can work on his fitness ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt in June.
Dolly struggled with injury and only played reserve team football in the second half of the season for his club Montpellier, so he needs to get minutes to prepare for AFCON.
“It’s very important because Keagan can help Bafana Bafana at AFCON. So when I look at Keagan for going to COSAFA, not many players can do that. You can see that he loves the game and he understands why he is playing football, so I’d give him credit for what he has done,” Kekana said.
“More than anything he cares about us and he cares about the team. It will help him to get match fitness and be sharp the way we need him to be. If he plays so many minutes at COSAFA, he stands a big of doing well at AFCON.”
Stuart Baxter still has to cut his squad from 30 to 23 and has to submit the list 10 days before the competition kicks off.
