Mhango, Flames have point to prove

Malawi forward Gabadinho Mhango has been praying for an opportunity to play against South Africa for years and later today will battle for the COSAFA Cup plate final at Moses Mabhida Stadium.

Mhango has been playing in South Africa for seven years and today will be the first time he comes up against any South African national team.

The Bidvest Wits attacker says it is an opportunity for him to prove to those who have been undermining Malawi that as a country they can deliver good football.

"As players and country we are happy to play in the plate final, but our man ambition before this tournament was to be in the main final. After training we told ourselves that we want to show South Africans that we are a strong team," he said.

"Personally it's a great feeling because I've been looking forward to playing against them. Whenever we talk with them they always say Malawi is not good enough and never qualify for anything. This is the time to prove that we are a good team."

Mhango has been enjoying the COSAFA Cup and has scored three goals, which gives him a chance to finish as top scorer and also three short of becoming the all-time leading scorer in the competition.

"With my teammates, anything is possible," he added. "I will just have to work hard and maybe I will get those two goals."
