Pirates secure a point at Al-Ahli

CAF Confederation Cup

Orlando Pirates remain unbeaten in the CAF Confederation Cup group stages after playing to a goalless draw against Al-Ahly Benghazi on Sunday evening.

Josef Zinnbauer made a few changes from the Soweto derby loss to Kaizer Chiefs as Wayne Sandilands, Ntsikelelo Nyauza, Terrence Dzvukamanja and Gabadinho Mhango were all given starts.

Sandilands was called to work in the first exchanges of the match following a smart delivery from the Libyan side, but the shot-stopper handled comfortably.

Pirates started to ask questions towards the half-hour mark, as a shot from a free-kick by Vincent Pule stung the gloves of the opposite number soon after Mhango threatened in similar fashion.

There did appear chances for either side minutes before the halftime period, but neither managed to take advantage thus the first half finished goalless.

Pirates came out guns blazing in the second half after a thumping long-range strike from Ben Motshwari crashed against the upright before Dzvukamanja scuppered a cutback from Mhango.

A spell of pressure from the Libyan outfit following the closing quarter had the Buccaneers under a bit of pressure, but it was nothing worth troubling for the South African giants.

Then a substitution from the Sea Robbers in the midway stage of the second half saw Dzvukamanja withdrawn for Tshegofatso Mabasa.

Mabasa, who netted the winner from the bench against Enyimba last time out, looked to make a similar impact a minute from entering but his glancing header couldn’t beat the opposite number.

Pirates knocked all the more in the last 20 minutes with a sharp volley from Mabasa and a clever attempt from Mhango but the Libyans held firm.

The Buccaneers still maintained the pressure in the remaining minutes, but goalless was how it ended in Benghazi.

Confirmed line-ups:

Pirates: Sandilands, Hlatshwayo, Nyauza, Mako, Ndlovu, Makaringe, Motshwari, Mntambo, Pule, Mhango, Dzvukamanja.

Subs: Mpontshane, Tshobeni, Sam, Dlamini, Mabaso, Jooste, Mabasa
