New rules for PSL big three in CAF

CAF Champions League

Kaizer Chiefs, Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates will face adjusted rules and regulations ahead of their CAF quarter-finals next week.

Chiefs and Sundowns remain alive in the Champions League while Pirates are in the Confederations Cup.

A communique from CAF on the increase of the number of substitutes on the bench for this season reads:

"Reference to the ongoing COVID19 pandemic, the number of players pre team was increased to 40 players instead of 30. Hence, it was decided to increase the number of substitute players on the bench from 7 to 9 players. The decision comes into effect starting from the quarterfinals of the season 2020/21," reads the communication from CAF addressed to member associations.

"Concerning the number of substitutions per match, please note that this information will be confirmed later depending on the decision of IFAB regarding the temporary amendments in the laws of the game,"

CAF are currently implementing the five-substitutions rule, which came into effect after the coronavirus.

Sundowns are set to battle it out with Pitso Mosimane's Al Ahly while Chiefs face Simba in two-legged matches that will decide who moves into the last four. Pirates face Raja Casablanca in their Confederation Cup quarter-final.

CAF also confirms that registrations for its 2021/22 club competitions closes on June 30.

Sundowns will play in the Champions League again next term for the eighth consecutive season as they are now within a stone’s throw of winning the domestic championship.

AmaZulu are in line to then make their Champions League debut if they hold on to second place.

In next season’s Confederation Cup, there will be a new kid on the block in either Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila or Chippa United depending on who wins this weekend’s Nedbank Cup.

The second entrant might also be a new face in continental football if Golden Arrows hold on to third place in the league.
