Affonso blow as Downs move fixture

CAF Champions League

Striker Mauricio Affonso has suffered another big injury blow as Mamelodi Sundowns confirm a change to their next CAF Champions League fixture.

Affonso last played for Sundowns in February 2020 in a CAF match against Wydad Casablanca but could finish the current season without touching the ball as he continues to suffer with injuries since his arrival at Chloorkop.

The Uruguayan striker underwent surgery during Level 5 lockdown in South Africa and returned to training at the start of the 2020/21 season.

However, Sundowns co-coach Manqoba Mngqithi has confirmed that Affonso has been hit by injuries again and may need a few more months before he can appear in the blue and yellow colours again.

"Affonso is still out, we will be not really sure when he is coming back because he always breaks down when we are hoping that he is coming back," he admitted after the league win over Orlando Pirates on Saturday.

"We are beginning to live with the fact that maybe he must recover fully and be ready to help us when he is ready. We believe that maybe in the next two to three months, if not four months [he will be back], but it's a tough one for us."

Sundowns are set to welcome Jwaneng Galaxy to Tshwane in the CAF Champions League on Tuesday having won 2-0 in Botswana before Christmas Day last year.

Kick-off has been adjusted to 16h00 to accommodate South Africa's 20h00 sporting curfew.
