Downs leap into CCL group stage

CAF Champions League

Mamelodi Sundowns registered a 5-1 aggregate victory over Botswana outfit Jwaneng Galaxy to book their places in the CAF Champions League group stage.

Sundowns managed 3-1 win in the first round second leg tie at Loftus Versfeld on Tuesday evening.

An own-goal by a Galaxy defender Moagi Sechele, a headed effort by Mothobi Mvala and a cool finish from Thapelo Morena saw The Brazilians cruise to victory, while Tebogo Sembowa managed a late consolation goal.

Sechele was unfortunate to bundle the ball into his own net after Kermit Erasmus tried to latch onto a cross but mistimed his shot in the 39th minute.

On the stroke of half-time, Erasmus was denied by the upright before Peter Shalulile picked up the rebound but also saw his effort saved by the goalkeeper.

The hosts could have doubled their aggregate lead early in the second half as Shalulile won a penalty in the 50th minute, but Ricardo Nascimento saw his effort from six-yards out saved by goalkeeper Katlego Mbise.

Mvala then made no mistake as he headed home Aubrey Modiba's corner in the 69th minute, placing the tie all but out of Galaxy's reach to bag his second goal against the Batswana.

Morena also added his name to the scoresheet when he latched onto a well-placed cross from Keletso Makgalwa and neatly placed the ball into the roof of the net from inside the box in the 82nd minute.

Sembowa will fondly remember his strike against the 2016 Champions League winners but it counted for little as his side bowed out of the competition.
