Sundowns soar towards top 50 ranking

CAF Champions League

Mamelodi Sundowns' success in 2019 has seen them rise as high as second in Africa within the Football World Ranking system but where do they rank amongst the world's elite?

The Football World rankings are based on a weekly points system earned within the top 40 leagues and 10 international competitions globally.

Points are amassed through match results (wins and draws) that are processed via an algorithm based on the strength of the competition, opponent, confederation and importance of the match.

And with Sundowns lifting the Absa Premiership in 2019 and once again excelling in the CAF Champions League, their remarkable rise has continued towards 65th place, just one spot off Percy Tau's Club Brugge.

African champions, Esperance de Tunis, who are third in Africa, are currently in 99th place in the world, while Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs are ranked 234th and 286th respectively.

It comes as no surprise to see the LaLiga champions FC Barcelona and reigning European champions, Liverpool, within the top 10 and they are joined by South American champions Flamengo.

Real Madrid and Manchester City are also amongst the 10 best sides in the world, which is rounded off by Palmeiras and Chelsea.
