Downs rising towards Africa's top 5

CAF Champions League

Mamelodi Sundowns' recent exploits have seen them rise towards the top five in the latest African club rankings.

Sundowns, now ranked sixth on the continent, achieved a historic domestic treble in the 2019/20 season before Pitso Mosimane's shock resignation to join Al Ahly.

But under the leadership of Manqoba Mngqithi and Rhulani Mokwena, Mosimane's successors, their unbeaten start in 2020/21 DStv Premiership has displayed signs that the upward trajectory could continue.

The record five-time South Africa league winner claimed the current Sundowns team is the 'best squad' since the 2015/16 team that lifted the CAF Champions League before departing for Cairo.

And with such a statement only a team of the Red Devils magnitude were able to lure him away from his job at Chloorkop that was set up for sustained success.

Within Masandawana's remarkable success, Chiefs inability to lift silverware for another season has seen them drop to 19th, below Coton Sport of Cameroon and Zimbabwe giants Dynamos.

Meanwhile, Orlando Pirates are in 16th place, but both sides will be aiming for strong continental showings this season as they look to climb towards the top 10.
