Downs' rise continues in Africa's top 10

Mamelodi Sundowns have continued to rise amongst Africa's elite in the latest club rankings, while Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs dropped further from the top 10.

Sundowns' historic treble exploits last season and their strong start to the 2020/21 season has seen them continue their upward trajectory despite the exit of Pitso Mosimane to Al Ahly.

At the half-way mark of the inaugural DStv Premiership campaign, they occupy a place at the summit of the table, five points ahead of second-placed SuperSport United.

The official rankings from Football Database are determined by an algorithm which considers the results of each team, the strength of the competition and awards points based on each match played - determining the overall ranking.

Both Chiefs and Pirates indifferent form in the South African top-flight has seen them drop since the previous update in 2020 - with Gavin Hunt's side nine spots down, while the Buccaneers have gone from 16th to 18th.

Amakhosi's CAF Champions League group C rivals Wydad Casablanca moved into the top 10 while their fierce rivals Raja dropped out after failing to qualify for Africa's elite club compeition.
