Sundowns close in on Zamalek, Ahly

Mamelodi Sundowns are closing in on Egyptian giants Al Ahly and Zamalek among the top 10 ranked clubs in Africa amid their record-breaking start to the 2021/22 season.

Sundowns have enjoyed an incredible start to the new season as they look towards securing a fifth consecutive league title with six wins and a draw in their first seven games.

Within the run, they've scored 12 goals and conceded none, with their clean sheet record extending back to last season with 10 consecutive games - equalling a feat of Wits University in the 2002/03 campaign.

Masandawana's recent domestic exploits have seen them move level with Egyptian Premier League champions Zamalek in points (1593) who have yet to begin their new domestic league season.

The official rankings from Football Database are determined by an algorithm that considers the results of each team, the strength of the competition and awards points based on each match played - determining the overall ranking.

AmaZulu who finished last season as runners-up behind Sundowns jumped over 60 places into 81st on the continent while Soweto giants Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates both dropped in the latest update.
