After a 0-0 draw at FNB Stadium in the first leg of the first-round tie, Gavin Hunt's side had their backs against the wall, but they managed to produce an incredible tactical display that's likely to boost their confidence as they look to turn the corner on the domestic front.

Solid in defence and dangerous on the counter, the home side struggled to deal with the pace and trickery of Khama Billiat, but it was Leonardo Castro who found the all-important goal just before the break after being teed up by the Zimbabwean.

Chiefs now join, among others, local rivals Mamelodi Sundowns, reigning champions Al Ahly – who are coached by Pitso Mosimane – as well as Zamalek in their very first round-robin stage of the elite continental competition.

The Soweto giants have also done so in emphatic fashion, having yet to concede a goal in their four Champions League outings thus far.

The group stage draw is scheduled to take place on Thursday, 7 January, after the last round of fixtures are completed this evening.
