Chiefs are bigger than Sundowns - Pitso

CAF Champions League

Al Ahly head coach Pitso Mosimane says CAF Champions League finalists Kaizer Chiefs are a bigger club than Mamelodi Sundowns.

Mosimane steered the Red Devils to a second consecutive Champions League final after a comfortable 4-0 win over four-time winners Esperance over the two-legged semi-final.

And they are set to face Chiefs for the one-off spectacle in Casablanca on 17 July after the South African club dumped Botola Pro giants Wydad AC out of the competition.

And Mosimane is wary that 'La Decima' is not a forgone conclusion despite Chiefs indifferent form during the 2020/21 season as he acknowledged the size of the club.

"Kaizer Chiefs are one of the biggest teams in South Africa in terms of popularity and they are bigger than Mamelodi Sundowns," Mosimane told the media.

"They’ve got a big support base, [bigger] than Mamelodi Sundowns but over the last 10 years, Sundowns have been strong."

He added: "Good team, but for me, it’s an awkward team. You can’t describe them easy, if you see they finished eighth on the log but they are in the Champions League final.

"It shows you that you have to pay attention to details to them but [they are a] very strong team in terms of organisation, they don’t give away goals easy.

"They have not conceded a goal in their stadium, it's the kind of team that doesn’t score a lot but they can defeat you."

Mosimane will be aiming for his third Champions League title and Stade Mohamed V later this month while this is the first time Chiefs advanced past the preliminary round.
