Chiefs boost SA's CAF ranking

CAF Champions League

Kaizer Chiefs have helped South Africa remain amongst the top 12 ranked national associations for the eighth year running to allow four clubs to enter the inter-club competitions.

South Africa sits amongst Morocco, Egypt, Tunisia, Algeria, DR Congo, Guinea, Nigeria, Zambia, Angola, Sudan, and Tanzania in the top dozen nations, according to the CAF five-year ranking system.

The continental football governing body has already opened for the registration of clubs that will play in the 2021/22 season, with the deadline set for June 30.

Mamlelodi Sundowns will enter the Champions League as domestic champions along with AmaZulu, who qualify as the second entrant for now.

Usuthu could find themselves relegated to the Confederation Cup should Chiefs go on to win the competition this season.

Amakhosi carry a 1-0 lead from the first leg and could be in next month’s final if they emerge aggregate winners against Wydad Casablanca.

As the national cup winners, Marumo Gallants – formerly Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila – will enter the Confederation Cup along with the league’s third-place finishers Orlando Pirates.

However, Pirates too could lose their ticket in the event that their Soweto rivals make history and AmaZulu take their spots.

Currently fifth, South Africa’s points tally in the standings could increase depending on what happens with Chiefs in the Champions League this year.

The CAF inter-club competitions are scheduled to start with the first round on the weekend of September 10-12 with the second legs being played a week later.

The second round will then take place on October 15-17 and October 22-24.

The last qualifying round for the Confederation Cup involving teams that will have dropped from the Champions League will then be played on November 26-28 and December 3-5.

The group stage matches will kick-off in February 2022.

In reaching the last four, Chiefs have this year earned the country 20 points so far, which could rise to 25 as runners-up and 30 if they are crowned champions.

Sundowns have provided 15 points after being knocked out in the quarterfinals of the Champions League, while Pirates added another 10 points for reaching the last eight of the Confederation Cup.
