Johnson set for shock Ahly exit?

CAF Champions League

Cavin Johnson has been linked with a shock exit from Al Ahly after just one year in Egypt with a sensational return to South Africa being mooted.

Johnson was lured to the record 10-time African champions by compatriot Pitso Mosimane in October last year after eight years of head coaching experience in the South African top-flight with Platinum Stars, SuperSport United, AmaZulu and Black Leopards.

Widely known for his attacking approach to football and sound development success, the coach known to have discovered Steven Pienaar was lauded for his impact with Mosimane during an incredible trophy-laden 2020/21 campaign.

Together, the South African duo lifted back-to-back CAF Champions League titles, a Super Cup, Egypt Cup and bronze medal at the FIFA Club World Cup.

Despite this incredible success, it appears that Johnson's time with the Red Devils is coming to an end.

This website has been informed that despite the circulating rumours, Johnson remains a valuable member of the technical team who have aims of building on their impressive maiden season together.

"Ahly is not looking to make any changes into the coaching staff and want to secure the future of Mosimane ahead of next season, I'm not sure where the talk of Johnson leaving comes from," a source close to the club tells KickOff.com.

Johnson himself said on Al Ahly TV last week that the rumours were unfounded and that he 'respects' the contract he signed with the club and urged fans to ignore the talk brewing on social media.

But former Ahly goalkeeper-turned-pundit Ahmed Shobier claimed on On-Time Sports that the club had already begun the process to search for Johnson's successor.

Samy Komsan, one of the current technical coaching members being the immediate favourite for the role while several other local coaching names have been bandied about in Egyptian media.

It's been suggested that Johnson has received an offer to return to South African football in a head coach capacity but it remains to be seen whether he'll depart the Club of the Century before the new season.
