Belouizdad end Downs' unbeaten run

CAF Champions League

Mamelodi Sundowns finished their CAF Champions League group stage campaign with a 2-0 loss to CR Belouizdad on Friday afternoon.

Sibusiso Vilakazi, who netted against Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila, got a first start this season while Khuliso Mudau, George Maluleka, Aubrey Modiba and Hlompho Kekana also started.

Masandawana battled to keep the Algerians at bay in the earlier exchanges with a smartly taken corner-kick and a glancing header from Ahmed Gasmi going narrowly wide.

Sundowns attempted to slice open the visitors following the midway stage of the first half, as a long range strike from Kekana agonizingly shaved the top of the crossbar.

It was Belouizdad that made the breakthrough when a low pass from goalkeeper Ricardo Goss a minute from the half-hour mark fell to Amir Sayoud, who rounded the shot-stopper to profit.

Belouizdad added a second before time added on after Gasmi connected with a cross from the right-side to head into the near corner.

The Brazilians targeted a swift start to the second half with their backs firmly against the wall, but the North African outfit pulled out a tough deep-lying defensive stall.

A triple substitution from the Tshwane side ten minutes from the break saw Gift Motupa, Lesedi Kapinga and Promise Mkhuma entered.

Belouizdad still looked to add more goals following the last 30 minutes with a snap shot from the far side by Mohamed Belkhir forcing Goss to make a low near post save.

Masandawana continued to urge forward as the match headed to full-time, but still couldn’t crack through the Algerians who survived the onslaught to join the host in the quarter-finals.
