Billiat sends Chiefs to CCL last eight

CAF Champions League

Kaizer Chiefs qualified for the CAF Champions League quarter-finals after coming from behind twice for a 2-2 draw against AC Horoya in a Group C clash on Saturday evening.

The suspensions of Daniel Akpeyi and Samir Nurkovic allowed the Amakhosi head coach Gavin Hunt to hand Itumeleng Khune and forward Khama Billiat starts in this crunch group stage finale.

As expected, the South African giants targeted a fast start in the first 12 minutes of the match and came close with a snap shot from Njabulo Blom going wide.

Horoya began to threaten shortly before the midway stage as a dangerous-looking header inside the area from Yakhouba Barry flew off target.

A fair share of chances fell for either side towards the closing quarter of the first half, but the Amakhosi came closest from a free-kick involving Lebogang Manyama.

Chiefs could’ve fallen behind right inside the remaining seven minutes of the half, but a smart header from Salif Coulibaly dragged wide before Khune smothered a header from Boniface Haba.

However, Horoya made the breakthrough on the stroke of halftime through a decent finish from Barry after the Amakhosi went to sleep.

The Guinean side looked to double their advantage minutes from the break, but Ocansey Mandela fired over, as the visitors introduced Lazarous Kambole for Happy Mashiane.

Chiefs purposely began to stage a comeback and were rewarded after Daniel Cardoso netted from the penalty spot on 67 minutes following a handball in the area.

The joy was short-lived as Horoya restored the lead two minutes later through a thumping header from a corner-kick by Coulibaly.

Horoya surrendered the lead for the second time with 15 minutes to go after Billiat met a ball from Dumisani Zuma to claw the Amakhosi level.

A nervy closing quarter ensued as both sides chased the winner, however the Amakhosi maintained calm to bag the draw and a quarter-final spot.
