Pitso praises SA ref ahead of CAFCL final

CAF Champions League

Al Ahly coach Pitso Mosimane has lauded South African referee Victor Gomes ahead of the CAF Champions League final.

Reigning and record 10-time African champions Al Ahly will look to defend their crown next week Monday when they go head to head with Morocco's Wydad Casablanca in the final of the 2021/22 CAF Champions League.

Leading South African referee Victor Gomes has been appointed to take charge of the fixture which, if won by Al Ahly, would see Mosimane become the first-ever coach to win the competition in three consecutive seasons.

Ahead of the encounter, the former Mamelodi Sundowns coach took to social media to laud the officiating of Gomes, who he enjoyed an infamously frosty relationship with during his time with Masandawana.

"How I used to criticise Victor Gomes, ate my humble pie a long time back and I am his biggest fan and he knows that," Mosimane said in a tweet. "I give him the respect that he deserves and he is currently the No. 1 referee on the continent.

"Just finished watching the Wydad vs A Petro Luyanda [match]. The manner at which he managed the game, players, and the dugouts. Just like he managed Senegal vs Egypt. Can we give him the honour of Ikhamanga? Please include [assistant referee] Zakhele Siwela."
