Zuma: SA players full of surprises

Bafana Bafana legend Sibusiso 'Rhee' Zuma has applauded the national team's crucial 2022 World Cup qualifying win over Ghana while insisting there remained plenty to do.

Hugo Broos' Bafana side beat Ghana 1-0 at the FNB Stadium thanks to a Bongokuhle Hlongwane goal to go top of the Group G standings.

Zuma preached caution in expectations for this young Bafana side, who he feels could eventually prove successful with the right guidance.

"The coach says he's building, and even now there are youngsters who I can see are already ready," Zuma tells Kickoff.com.

"They just need game-time and to learn how to do things to operate at an international level, and then you will start winning games.

"These boys from SuperSport United, Teboho Mokoena and Sipho Mbule with the proper support can build a strong midfield.

"If we have players like Percy, people who know how to take care of the ball and still run, the creativity is a lot. Knowing our boys going forward there's no problem there.

"South African players are just full of surprises, they will give you a performance like against Ghana. The only problem is the conditioning. Here at home, we don't focus that much on conditioning. You can see during games if we play international teams, we tend to struggle.

"Especially the second half or towards the end of the games. That falls under the coaches, it's a sign that the conditioning needs to be taken seriously as well. Players need to be fit. These boys need to understand they are here to work.

"But then again it makes me happy to see guys like Benni (McCarthy) and assistants like Nomvethe (Siyabonga) coaching because the boys will be able to talk to them.

"We are still building, it's still early. Let's just be happy about the performance and not get too excited. This is the best of the best, World Cup qualifiers bring out the best.

"So whoever is coming against us you know it's going to be tough. So let's just be happy about the result and let the coach continue his work. He still has a lot to do."
