Baxter: Beware the man with nothing to lose

South Africa continue their World Cup qualifying campaign away to the islanders on Friday, before resuming hostilities in the return fixture in Durban four days later.

And while South Africa may be the favourites on paper, Baxter is not counting on anything as they look for a spot at Russia 2018.

“My father, God bless him, he said to me ‘always beware of the man with nothing to lose’ so they [Cape Verde] have nothing to lose, they’ll go for it big time,” Baxter told the media.

“I think we need to go there with the same attitude. They can play the way they want; if we play well I think we have a good chance of getting the result.

“We’ve got to make sure our mentality is tight. We want to be a team, we want to make sure everyone puts in 100 percent, we want to be able to express ourselves in the right way, have that feeling of no regrets, no anxiety. We’re just looking forward to the game and to quieten down all the other chit-chat that may have made us complacent, or may have made us nervous.

“That’s the mentality I want with every game; whether it’s Spain on the other end of the field, whether it’s Cape Verde, we play our game and if we find that game more and more, we’ve got a bigger chance of being able to come to that point.”

Bafana face Cape Verde at Estádio Nacional de Cabo Verde on Friday [20h30 kick-off] before contesting the return leg at Moses Mabhida Stadium on September 5 [19h00].
