Young Phiri pens four-year Brondby deal

The 18-year-old’s contract has been extend for a further four years.

Initially, Phiri joined the Copenhagen West side’s Under-19 team, but injuries and suspensions saw Phiri make the first team bench for four weeks before making his stunning debut on April 30.

Ever since then, Phiri has never looked back and also went on to score two crucial goals in his five appearances that also helped rescue the club from relegation.

The midfielder says he is glad he can finally call Brondby home.

“I am very honoured that Brondby has given me the chance and offered me this contract. It feels really, really good and I'm very proud that I can call Brondby my home.

“My future is now in place and I can focus on my football to become better every day. Last season’s finish was great for me, and I need to keep my feet firmly on the ground and working even harder for the new season. Through hard work comes success,” he tells the club’s official website.

“I would like to thank everybody in the team for the manner in which I’ve been treated. With their help, I’ve grown, and I owe them big thanks for that now I have signed a long contract.

“All the fans have also been incredible and have supported me and the other players through the hard times. I hope to serve the club in a great manner in the future. “

Brondby’s retiring sports director Ole Bjur, who played a huge role in Phiri’s move, has been extremely impressed with him.

“Lebo is undoubtedly a great talent and we are delighted that he will now be with us for four more years.

“I predict Lebo a great future if he can continue to be equally unimpressed and work just as hard and humbly with his development as a footballer. He has some footballing qualities that are very well developed for such a young player, and his head is screwed on quite right. He is what you would call football intelligent; he sees many things on the field before others.”
