Owen Da Gama, who previously coached Mothiba at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games with the South Africa national under-23 side, has been overjoyed with the 22-year-old's rise to the senior men’s team.
Currently in charge of NFD champions-elect Highlands Park, 'ODG' has outlined some of the stand-out characteristics of the Lille forward and believes South Africa has yet to see the best of him, despite having bagged two goals in two appearances at the Four Nations tournament last week.
“I was very happy for Lebo’s call-up, I thought it was long overdue because he’s done very, very well this season, even after moving back to Lille,” Da Gama tells KickOff.com.
“He’s a very strong player and his running off the ball is really good, he’s a top striker and I think we haven’t seen the best of him yet.
“I think the boy is going to go places, he’s very disciplined and I remember when he was with the Olympics squad, although he was playing in Europe he was first to carry water-bottles, bibs and balls at training.
“He’s a joy to work with and he’s highly disciplined, and he’s been trained very well too.”
Mothiba earned promotion to the Lille first team in January, after impressing while on loan at French second division side Valenciennes, and has already scored twice in six Ligue 1 starts.
