Vila magic secures draw

In hot and humid conditions in Gabon’s capital Libreville, South Africa were under the cosh as early as the sixth minute after Themba Zwane conceded a foul on the edge of the box.

Danger man Vincent Aboubakar took the resulting free-kick, curling a well-taken effort past Brilliant Khuzwayo in the Bafana Bafana goal to hand the Indomitable Lions the lead.

The goal seemed to spur the Cameroon side on as they took control of the opening half, with South Africa offering very little going forward, as Bafana went into the break trailing 1-0.

Shakes Mashaba’s half-time talk seemed to have done the trick as South Africa looked a different unit in the second period, stringing a number of passes together as they went in search of the equaliser.

And it finally came in the 76th minute as substitute Sibusiso Vilakazi, a half-time change for Bernard Parker, gathered the ball on the edge of the area, smartly getting past the defender before poking the ball home to level proceedings.

Fellow second half substitutes Thuso Phala and Mandla Masango added an injection of energy and pace into the latter stages of the game, a brilliant run by the former on the left side not finding a teammate as his square-ball flashed across the face of all.

Neither side could find the winner as the match ended all square at one goal apiece, as Bafana Bafana look forward to one last friendly, against Mali on Wednesday, to finalise their preparations for Afcon 2015.
