Maritzburg book TKO last four spot

Telkom Knockout

Maritzburg United secured passage to the semi-finals of the Telkom Knockout with a 4-3 penalty shoot-out win over Highlands Park on Friday evening.

Jeremy Brockie was reduced to the stands in place of Judas Moseamedi for the Team of Choice with Reneilwe Letsholonyane, Marlong Heugh and Bevan Fransman the visitors key changes.

United were fortunate not to fell behind after Wayde Jooste tapped wide of the far post on eight minutes following good work down the right from Mokeke Mogaila.

The breakthrough arrived four minutes later when Jerry Msane headed into the far corner of an empty net after Bongani Mpandle failed to parry a high ball into the area.

Mxolisi Kunene went inches away from drawing level on 31 minutes following a defence splitting ball in which the fullback flashed wide of the near post after pulling a cut back.

The Team of Choice shuffled the feathers right from the restart and introduced Yusuf Jappie for Dylan Claasen who struggled to carry on after a knock in the first half.

United’s upward trajectory grew stronger in the second half and levelled after Mlungisi Mbunjana headed past Heugh four minutes in whilst attempting a clearance from a corner kick.

The goal instantly livened up the home side who found big openings afterwards, but Jappie in particular failed to profit amidst the inviting chances.

Jappie then launched a powering free-kick from outside the area ten minutes to go, but Heugh retreated to tip over for a corner.

The contest went to extra time after neither side found the winner during regulation time, and poor finishing from United continued setting the side aback, leaving the clash to a penalty shootout.

Both sides missed their opening spot kicks in the shootout, but United ended winning the contest with Gilbert Nyoni netting the winning kick.
