SuperSport look to maintain run

Telkom Knockout

Matsatsantsa have won their last two matches – against Platinum Stars and Bloemfontein Celtic – to halt their early-season slide and climb up to ninth in the standings.

But they face a tough challenge today against a Stars side up in sixth spot and with just one defeat in their last five outings.

SuperSport made it all the way to the Telkom Knockout semifinals last year before losing to Orlando Pirates.

Overall they have played 16 Telkom Knockout matches since the tournament’s inception in 2006, recording seven wins, three draws and six defeats. They have won one of the three penalty shootouts they have been involved in.

Their best showing in the Telkom Knockout era is reaching the last four, a feat they have achieved in the past two seasons.

In League Cup history, SuperSport have twice reached the final (2004 & 2005), but lost on both occasions.

Stars reached the quarterfinal of last season’s tournament where Kaizer Chiefs beat them on penalties.

They have played 15 Telkom Knockout matches since 2006, recording seven wins, two draws and six defeats.

Ea Lla Koto’s best showing in the Telkom Knockout era is reaching the semifinals, a feat they achieved three times: 2007/08, 2008/09 & 2012/13.

In League Cup history, Stars have won the tournament once (1994) and been runners-up twice (1996 & 1999).

In head-to-head stats, SuperSport and Stars have met in just three previous cup matches. Matsatsantsa have claimed two victories, with one win going the way of Ea Lla Koto.

The teams’ most recent cup clash was in the quarterfinals of the 2012 MTN8, with SuperSport claiming a 2-1 home win.

Overall, the teams have met in 40 matches across all competitions since 1986. Matsatsantsa have 15 wins compared to 10 for Stars, while 15 matches have been drawn.

The teams have met once already this season, with Stars coming from two goals down to win 3-2 in a League clash back in August.
