Baxter: Chiefs must enjoy pressure

Telkom Knockout

The Amakhosi have won all 11 their matches this season, and the question is rapidly gaining momentum as to how long they will remain ‘invincible’.

“These players are under pressure all the time because they are at a club with big ambitions,” Baxter says. “It doesn’t matter what game we play, we are always under pressure, be it [Orlando] Pirates or AmaZulu.

“At a club with ambition you have to perform every week and it means you are under pressure and you cannot take a week off. If you play for a team without any ambitions then you can have a bad day and show your shoulders, but here it will take your place and our supporters will go crazy. This is the pressure that you are under.

“I don’t think it is anyway different … the pressure changes from game to game. The pressure for this game [in the Telkom Knockout against Maritzburg United] is different because this is a new tournament against the same opponent on the back of a good run.

“That is the pressure that we have to deal with and get on with while giving a good performance. The players here should actually enjoy this pressure; I will not change this even for being third and fourth.

You want this pressure … if people are chasing then that is great because it means that you are doing something right. So you have to deal with it and it is all part of the game and it is welcome pressure at the moment.”

Baxter, who is enjoying his best run since arriving at Chiefs in 2012, will lead AmaKhosi into the third competition of the season when his team host Maritzburg on Saturday night at FNB Stadium.
