De Sa misses Sangweni

Telkom Knockout

De Sa estimates that Sangweni – who was injured on  October 8 during the Telkom Knockout match against Mpumalanga Black Aces – will only be back in action after Christmas and admits the absence of the Bafana Bafana hardman is a blow to the team.

Pirates will today face Golden Arrows at Orlando Stadium in a Telkom Knockout fixture and – just as in the Champions League encounter against Esperance – De Sa will have to reshuffle his combinations in defence.

“As you know, Sangweni had an operation on his Achilles tendon and we do not expect him to be back in action before Christmas,” De Sa tells

“He is influential in the team and it is unfortunate not to have him in action together with other players like Patrick Phungwayo, who are also out due to injury.

“But this will present a chance for other players and I am not too worried because we have a large pool of players,” De Sa adds.

Pirates’ congested fixture this season – which has seen them competing in the CAF Champions League while also fulfilling their domestic obligations – appears to have taken its toll on the players, a lot of whom have picked up injuries along the way.

However, De Sa has previously told that the club will not be going into the transfer market as he feels there is no need to add on to his already large squad.
