South Africa's Thibang Phete and Sphephelo Sithole were both in action as Belenenses suffered a pre-season defeat to AS Roma on Wednesday.

Bafana Bafana defender Phete (27) and countryman Sithole (22) both featured for Belenenses as the Primeira Liga side ended their pre-season preparations with a 3-1 defeat to Jose Mourinho's AS Roma.

The duo both started and featured for the first 45 minutes of the match as the Portuguese outfit went into the half-time break with the scores locked at 1-1, before being replaced for the second stanza as coach Petit rang the changes ahead of this weekend's league opener against Porto.

Their Italian opponents ultimately emerged victorious following two second-half goals from Nicolo Zaniolo and Borja Mayoral but the match will have served as good practice for Belenenses, who are looking to bounce back from last month's shock Taça da Liga exit in their season-opening encounter.

Phete and Sithole, affectionately known as Cafu and Yaya, were mainstays within their club's starting XI last season. Combined they amassed more than 50 appearances across all competitions and are expected to retain that status for the upcoming campaign.

The former made his Bafana Bafana debut in November last year against Namibia as a result of his impressive club form, while the latter is believed to be on the radar of national team selectors ahead of a potential call-up in the near future.

Belenenses' encounter against Porto takes place at the Estádio Do Dragão on Sunday evening, with the match set to kick-off at 19:00, local time.
