Bafana Bafana coach Stuart Baxter is set to announce two separate squads for the 2019 COSAFA Cup and Africa Cup of Nations next week.
Several nations have already revealed their preliminary squads ahead of the regional competition as well as the AFCON in Egypt next month, while South Africa have yet to do so.
The COSAFA Cup is scheduled to kick-off on May 25 with the pool stage, though Bafana will only enter the competition in the knockout phase starting on June 1.
The continental showpiece, meanwhile, is set to get underway on June 21, with Bafana’s opening fixture against Ivory Coast pencilled in for June 24.
However, KickOff.com can confirm that Baxter is set to address the media either on Tuesday or Thursday next week as he rounds up his troops for the two competitions.
The British tactician has previously explained his approach in separating the squads but has not ruled out the possibility of including top performers at COSAFA.
“This COSAFA, pre-AFCON, there were some quarters that wanted us to use COSAFA solely as preparation for AFCON. Well, on many levels that fails,” explained Baxter.
“We need to ensure that all players are recuperated properly pre-, during and between events. The players are coming off a very long season and doing do stagnant.
“For example, we have a Wits player who finished on May 12 while a Chiefs player will finish on May 19, now how do you make sure you don’t burn out those players?
“So, if we meet on May 25, the Chiefs players will only have had six days rest. So, with that thinking, you’ll realise that this makes sense [to call up two separate squads].”
Bafana assistat coach Molefi Ntseki is set to oversee the COSAFA campaign, while Baxter does visits to players aborad prior to the AFCON.
