Baxter: Percy needs to make another step

Tau is on loan to Belgium second tier club Royale Union Saint-Gilloise from English Premier League outfit Brighton Hove and Albion

Tau scored a brace in Bafana’s final Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Libya on Sunday, as the senior national team booked a spot in the competition which will be held in Egypt in June.

“I think he has got better since he went to Belgium. I think it’s a confidence thing. I don’t think he is getting, let’s say, better coaching. Even the matches in Belgian second division, I don’t think it’s like playing for Barcelona. I think the fact that he has gone to Europe and can handle that, that’s helping his confidence,” Baxter said at the team arrival at OR Tambo International Airport on Tuesday morning.

“I think he needs to make another step and I think he will do. And I he needs to find his role now in the national team.”

Baxter says he had a chat with Tau at half-time against Libya to work on his decision making in the second half.

“We do need to look at the development of Percy and I think he will be an important player for a long time. In the first half Percy was not clear in his own mind. He was getting on the ball and he was looking to do a lot of things and not really deciding to do anything. We wanted him to be a lot sharper and make other people come into the game and

“We spoke about shooting around defenders, because that’s something that we’ve identified from the [2018] World Cup, that it’s a trend. When people defend deep and there’s lot of bodies, if you shoot around the defenders then the goalkeeper is unsighted. So at half time we just asked him to make sure that he makes quicker decisions and if he gets his strike and it’s on target, that’s okay. In the second half I thought he was lively.”
