Morocco coach Vahid Halilhodžić has revealed his surprise at Bafana Bafana's fast start after having to come from behind to defeat South Africa.

North African giants Morocco opened their 2023 CAF Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign with a narrow 2-1 win over South Africa on Thursday, coming from 1-0 down at halftime to claim a 2-1 win courtesy of goals from Youssef En-Nesyri and Ayoub El Kaabi.

Despite recording the win, Atlas Lions coach Vahid Halilhodžić admitted that he was surprised by the fast start made by Bafana Bafana, who opened the scoring through Lyle Foster in the eighth minute following a clinical counter-attack.

"The players must be congratulated because the game was not easy and we knew that South Africa had a good team," Halilhodžić said, per Lion d'Atlas. "They surprised us by scoring with their first opportunity."

"The boys played well but sinned in the achievement by missing a lot of opportunities. But we must still congratulate them for their combativeness, their will and for their quality of play

"Now, we must rest and treat the little sores before preparing for the match against Liberia where, of course, I expect another victory, a second and we will almost qualify for the next AFCON."
