Moloi reveals Shongwe interest

Moloi is currently tasked with trying to beef up his squad for the second half of the 2017/18 PSL season, as he eyes a CAF qualification spot for the Chilli Boys in 2019.

Upon receiving his Absa Premiership Coach of the Month award for November earlier this week, the ex-Orlando Pirates assistant coach mentioned two positions he felt needed strengthening.

“So far so good [with the squad]. I think the only positions I need to reinforce is my striking department and maybe one extra central defensive midfielder,” said Moloi.

“Because I only have [Sandile] Zuke, [Abel] Mabaso and [Sizwe] Mdlinzo, so maybe I need a little bit of experience.

“With the striking force, I’m busy having trials with players from outside the continent, but so far I haven’t seen anything that I like.

“Those are the only two positions and I don’t want two more [in each position]. No, only one will do then the team will be complete.”

Moloi added that, prior to taking over as head coach of the Port Elizabeth-based outfit in September, he had been looking at snapping up Shongwe from the Clever Boys.

Moloi was appointed as an assistant to coach Dan Malesela before the start of the season, but his relationship with the head coach turned sour and he left. Moloi returned when Malesela parted ways with Chippa.

Shongwe instead completed a loan switch to Abafana Bes'thende shortly before transfer deadline day, which has forced Moloi to turn his attention elsewhere.

“Before I joined [Chippa] I was looking at Jabulani Shongwe and unfortunately Arrows took him. There’s one or two others I’m now looking at, that I think if I talk to the chairman he might be able to get them,” added ‘Tebza’.

“It also depends on whether the coach from that team is still using them, or if he’s still interested in [keeping them].”
