The 24-year-old was previously playing for DR Congo giants AS Vita Club. The Team of Choice view him as a direct replacement for former captain Kurt Lentjies, who left at the end of last season to join Chippa United.
Atouba will be a player that South Africans and Mamelodi Sundowns will be familiar with after he scored against the African champions in the last match of the CAF Champions League group stages on July 9, a game which ended in a 1-1 draw at Lucas Moripe Stadium.
He also featured against Sundowns when Pitso Mosimane came away with a 3-1 victory in May in Kinshasa. And before that, he scored in the previous match against Etoile du Sahel in the group stages, but his side lost 3-1.
"The club [Maritzburg United] has signed a Cameroon midfielder Yazid Atouba from AS Vita Club. He was at Maritzburg offices on Wednesday and the club at that time they were looking for a place for him. So I'm told he has been signed," a source tells KickOff.com.
Atouba, whose new side have started this season with two straight Absa Premiership wins, will be hoping that all the papers required are issued before they host SuperSport United in the MTN8 semi-finals on September 9.
