Amakhosi have experienced somewhat of a goalkeeping crisis in recent weeks, with reserve goalkeeper Virgil Vries proving fickle in the absence of their undisputed number-one.

The services of Nigerian international Daniel Akpeyi was since brought in on deadline day, while the likes of Bruce Bvuma and Brylon Petersen have also fallen down the pecking order.

Molefe’s promotion at the age of just 16 follows that of 21-year-old wing-back Happy Mashiane, as well as a host of other youngsters that have made the step-up in the last three years.

“Apart from Mashiane, we are excited to announce the promotion of another goalkeeper Karabo Molefe. Karabo is only 16-years-old but has done well in the development team,” announced football manager Bobby Motaung in a club statement.

“With his height and talent, we believe he will be one to watch for the future as he also has an advantage of learning from all the experienced top goalkeepers we have in the team.

“We have a fairly young side and we’ve added more young talent, which will inject more young energy in the squad.”

Motaung is also hopeful that the team can go all the way in their cup and league title bid, as they look to put an end to their near four-year trophy drought.

“We hope to go all the way in the Nedbank Cup and challenge for league honours come end of the season,” he added.

Chiefs’ promotions since 2016/17: Siyabonga Ngezana, Emmanuel Letlotlo (on loan to Baroka), Bruce Bvuma, Brylon Petersen, Wiseman Meyiwa (retired), Siphosakhe Ntiya-Ntiya, Nkosingiphile Ngcobo, Yusuf Bunting (on loan to Highlands Park), Khotso Malope, Happy Mashiane, Karabo Molefe.
