Sono slams "waste of time" play-offs

Sono reiterated his stance after his side played to a 2-2 draw with Black Leopards in their play-offs opener at Vosloorus Stadium on Sunday.

The play-offs pit the second and third-placed finishers in the National First Division with the second-from-bottom team in the Absa Premiership, with the victor earning a spot in the topflight in the new season.

Highlands Park were automatically promoted as 2017/18 NFD champions, taking the place of Ajax Cape Town. Ajax were originally in the play-offs, but were relegated and lost their spot to Platinum Stars after SAFA docked them points for fielding an ineligible player in Tendai Ndoro. The Urban Warriors unsuccessfully tried to interdict the play-offs through the courts.

“I won't change my stand, I think they are a waste of time,” Sono said.

“I think they are too strenuous for teams. Every year in the National First Division there are court cases.

“If you remember when Polokwane City was promoted nobody knew what was going to happen. Now this time we don't know what's going to happen.”

He added: “If there are certain teams which are not supposed to go out maybe from the league and they end up on 14th position, let them play play-offs with number three.

“Let there be a play-offs between these two and it will look nicer. But like this is not on if Leopards should get second position then they should go up. There was no need for play-offs but it all depends on a vote. I can say whatever I want, to be honest I'm wasting my time.

“The people at the top, they decide. There is nothing you can do but they are not right.”
