The 31-year-old Johannes has starred for the Citizens, helping the club win the Telkom Knockout in their debut campaign in 2016/17 after he parted ways with AmaZulu. He was a natural choice to captain the coastal outfit when Lebogang Manyama joined Turkish side Konyaspor in August 2017.
"The player [Johannes] has served us well. He has been exemplary for the club and obviously we are very happy to have him until the end of the season," Comitis tells KickOff.com.
"But to be honest, we weren't sure about his future going forward and I need to make sure that we are ready. It is the reason why we signed Kwanda who was already preparing for that potentially happening.
"So he served his time here, he's 32 years old [Ed: 31] and Tshepo Gumede is 26 and hasn't had much game-time. We have to be also realistic about players when they reach that age in their careers."
Comitis also downplayed the loss of star winger Aubrey Ngoma and striker Lehlohonolo Majoro to Mamelodi Sundowns and Bidvest Wits last month. The Citizens have since brought in replacements in Surprise Ralani and Masoud Juma.
"I didn't lose Majoro... I was very aware that Majoro was going to Wits and he went there with our blessing... okay," says Comitis.
"I didn't lose Ngoma but I got a transfer fee for Ngoma. I think you need to realise that we didn't have Ngoma in any case for the last six months [through injury], so we already prepared for life without Ngoma.
"For us to be allowing the situation to be as it is, you must know that they have gone with our eyes open. We wouldn't be doing this if we didn't think we had a plan of succession.
"You see everything is relevant and that is why I'm saying if you want to stay here it is usually about more money. We would give it where we think it's worth it and we are going to get a result out of it.
"Just to pay more money, it's not always the right decision. It's important that when you pay extra money, are you going to get that much extra out of the player? Is he going to deliver double if you double his salary? So those kinds of questions the club has to take into consideration. So we were very aware that his contract was coming to an end."
