Johnson, who recruited Mabiliso from ex-employers Platinum Stars, handed the 18-year-old his debut in a 2-0 loss to Chippa United on Sunday, and was thrilled with the Amajita international's efforts at King Zwelithini Stadium.

"Sibusiso Mabiliso did a fantastic job,” Johnson told Usuthu's website.

"He was great going up and down in the left-back position. He stood his ground and he played the position very well."

He added: “He looked comfortable for kid who just came back from the COSAFA tournament which they won [in Zambia last month]. He has been a good kid since the age of 10 years old. So, we have always watched him.

"In fact he comes from the crop of players I picked [at Stars]. I know he has the quality. I hope he is able to maintain it and make sure that he makes that position his."

Mabiliso faces competition for game-time at the Premiership strugglers with former Kaizer Chiefs defender Simphiwe Mtsweni.

Johnson's side are two points above the drop zone after 14 games, and next visit mid-table Baroka this Sunday (15h30).
