The Cape Town born Lakay has struggled to command a regular spot in Eric Tinkler’s Matsatsantsa outfit since his move from Santos more than two seasons ago.
The arrival of youngster Darren Smith recently could also have swayed Tinkler’s mind to offload Lakay as both are similar players.
The 21-year-old Smith ironically joined SuperSport from Lakay’s former side Santos.
It’s believed that Ajax enquired about Lakay and Tinkler is said to have given the green light for the deal to happen. Lakay is likely to get more game time under Muhsin Ertugral at the club.
“This move could benefit both Fagrie and Ajax who wish to revert back to the Ajax style,” a source close to Ajax explained to KickOff.com.
“Fagrie is that type of player. He's got pace and he has [a lot of] experience for such a young player. So he will definitely give the team more impetus in attack,” the source added.
The 20-year Lakay, who made history in 2015 when he became the youngest ever Bafana Bafana international when he took to the field against Ivory Coast aged 17 years, 5 months, 30 days, has made just one Absa Premiership appearance for Matsatsantsa.
The young attacker also had trials with Dutch side PEC Zwolle earlier in the season but could unfortunately not land a permanent move to Europe soon.
