Stober, who won the topflight's top scorer award with 18 goals for Hellenic in 1995, quit the game at the age of 29.
The Cape Town-born ex-striker also had a spell with Santos and led the line for Bafana Bafana.
"I think I retired at the age of 29. I didn't retire, I just stopped playing professional football," Stober tells KickOff.com.
"I think 11 years of playing professional football was enough for me. I was playing since 18 so I started a bit earlier. My professsional career started at Santos, I did well at Santos but obviously Hellenic was a stepping stone to bigger things. I joined Hellenic when Santos got relegated. I had highs and lows at all three clubs, obviously I enjoyed Pirates quite a bit because they were fully professional. They treated me like a Buccaneer, I was well received and obviously I enjoyed the fans as well. The football culture was very different.
"I never played football for the money, it was a bonus to get money but I did it for the love of the game. The most I earned was R20 000, that was in 1995, 1996. Players those days were earning way less than that. I missed the game but I don't regret anything and I don't regret being involved earlier than now. Obviously there are more opportunities now but I don't regret anything. For me it wasn't difficult to save money because I wasn't entirely dependent on that money. I still had a stable job on the side as well. I was into computers, IT.
"These days to put food on the table I am coaching software teams to become high-performance teams. That goes hand in hand with coaching football teams as well, it's got similar principles etc.
"I am married, got one kid, he is now one-and-a-half years."
Stobe says the current state of football in the country requires improvement.
"Goalscorers struggle to get even to 15 goals, that says a lot. I can't compare standards but the football doesn't attract me to watch every game. Ja, so there's lots that still needs to be done. I think I can add a lot of value in that aspect as well. I can't put my finger on what is wrong but there are a number of things that can be improved. I think I was at Hellenic and I won the top goalscorer with 20 something goals. I can't remember but it was more than 20."
