Zinnbauer praises ‘big player in Africa’

Orlando Pirates coach Josef Zinnbauer has reserved praise for reigning PSL Footballer of the Season Thembinkosi Lorch following a key adjustment in his game.

Lorch looks to be slowly returning to his previous best that saw him play an integral role in Pirates’ runners-up finish last season to earn the top honours at the end-of-season awards.

The 26-year-old endured a difficult start to the current season, failing to contribute neither a goal nor an assist in the first half of the campaign.

However, Zinnbauer’s arrival also seems to have sparked a turn in fortunes for the Bafana Bafana midfielder, who has since registered a goal and an assist in his last three appearances.

He also put in an industrious shift in The Buccaneers 2-1 victory over his former side Chippa United at the weekend, which has earned the praise of the German tactician.

“Yeah, Lorch… I think you know this better than me, he is a big player in Africa. It’s not just a moment, last year was very good for him and he was a big player in Africa,” said Zinnbauer.

“And now he’s on his way to coming back [to form] and for me it’s the best work he’s done in defence [against Chippa], which was before not the case.

“Now he works for the team and he’s a team player now. He’s made a step in the right direction, and that is important for me to see. But, yeah, Lorch is a top player.”
