The Briton took a lot of flak for using three central defenders in Morgan Gould, Tefu Mashamaite and Mulomowandau Mathoho in the 3-1 loss to SuperSport United two weeks ago, but Baxter is adamant that’s an offensive system and plans to use it again.
“We never played with a back-five [three central defenders plus wing-backs] and I don’t know where you guys got this from,” Baxter laments.
“In England they look at that as a more offensive formation because you push your wing-backs forward, but here everybody thinks negative. Ask ‘Pa’ [Siboniso Gaxa] and Tsepo [Masilela] if they like playing like that because they run about 13 to 14 kilometers a match while, usually, as a fullback, you run about 11-12 kilometers. So we ask them to do an extra two kilometers, so it is definitely not a back-five.
“It is meant to be more offensive and more secure on the transition, because you’ve got your three centre-backs always there. We will definitely play that way again, depending on the opponents. I certainly don’t see it as defensive. It is slightly different.”
