Shongwe hopes to emulate ‘Vila’

And the move proved to be a breakthrough one for the School of Excellence graduate as he scored three times in 16 matches to help the Students to a third-placed finish and a Nedbank Cup Final appearance.

Now Shongwe says he wants to follow in the footsteps of Wits teammate Vilakazi, who walked away with all the accolades at the end-of-season PSL awards.

“I want to win silverware with Wits, with the League being the ultimate target,” he says in the latest edition of KICK OFF Magazine. 

“I want to have things to show off when I retire. I will take the individual awards with pride, especially if the team has done well.

“I have been inspired by Sibusiso Vilakazi because we played against each other in development and together in the national Under-23 squad and now he wins Footballer of the Season, so it shows anything is possible.”

Shongwe adds: “I also have overseas thoughts because South African football is not where it all ends. I want to have a feel for how it is to play abroad.”
