Nurkovic's Chiefs future in doubt

Samir Nurkovic's future at Kaizer Chiefs remains in doubt after the Soweto giants reportedly failed to meet a deadline set in exercising an option to extend his contract.

Chiefs had set March 31 as the date to decide on the option of a further year on Nurkovic's contract which the Serbian had penned at the beginning of last season.

As it stands the Serbian is now able to sign a pre-contract with another club as he is due to walk away as a free agent at the end of June.

According to information reaching this website, Chiefs wanted to extend the period upon which they can decide on the option up to May 31 but failed to reach that agreement with Nurkovic's representatives.

"Though Chiefs have already made up their minds on other players that they are either keeping or releasing they are undecided on Samir which is why they have requested for an extension," a source tells KickOff.

"It is rather awkward because that March 31 date was put by them, and this extension request will only suit them and not the player.

"What if they still don't take up the option after that extension?

"That will leave the player in a difficult situation with lesser time to find another club."

Nurkovic was outstanding in his first season with Chiefs scoring 14 goals that resulted in an improved contract.

Negotiations were complicated by reported interest in his services from the Middle East from where official offers were tabled only for the club to turn them down.

Chiefs has now been keen to trade on the Serbian since the beginning of this season but the interest from Egypt has not been turned into official offers.

The 29-year-old is in his third season with AmaKhosi, the first club that he has been with for three years through his nomadic career.

Nurkovic scored his first goal of the season on Saturday against Chippa United following a difficult start to the season.

He has played 10 games this season half of which he played before undergoing knee surgery at the end of September, an injury that he initially picked up last season’s CAF Champions League semi-finals.
