Royal Eagles made a promising start to the PSL promotion/relegation play-offs on Wednesday afternoon.
After missing out on automatic promotion, Eagles started the play-offs with a 1-0 victory over Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila (TTM) at Chatsworth Stadium, thanks to a goal from former Chippa United midfielder Mbulelo Wambi.
Eagles finished second in the National First Division on 53 points, three behind champions Stellenbosch FC, while TTM were in third place on 51 points.
Eagles dominated the opening stages of the match in an effort to establish an early foothold, but the visitors were making it difficult for them to find the back of the net.
They did, however, find a chink in the opposition armour in the 22nd minute, as Wambi got his head onto a corner kick.
TTM brought on former Mamelodi Sundowns and Kaizer Chiefs striker Edward Manqele, hoping to get that equalising goal. He had a brilliant shot which was saved by the hosts’ goalkeeper in the final 20 minutes of the clash.
TTM put under pressure towards the end of the game, but Eagles held on for the all important win and will be hoping that it's the start of good things for them in the play-offs.
Eagles will take on Maritzburg United, who finished in the Absa Premiership season in 15th place, at Harry Gwala Stadium on Sunday (15h00).
The Maritzburg team, led by head coach Eric Tinkler were at the stadium to watch the two teams will they be coming up against in the play-offs.
