Chippa take big step with SSU win

A hat-trick from Rhulani Manzini proved the difference at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium to hoist the Chilli Boys out of the relegation zone at Highland Parks’ expense with just one round of fixtures remaining.

The Chilli Boys looked to impose themselves on the game early on but Xolani Mdaki’s attempt at goal was blocked, before Zaphaniah Mbokoma lashed a shot over the crossbar with 11 minutes gone.

It was then SuperSport’s turn to threaten and they came close to opening the scoring through Mandla Masango, only for the midfielder to see his goal-bound effort fantastically turned away by Daniel Akpeyi.

The game continued to prove lively but gilt-edged chances proved few and far between, highlighted by Menzi Masuku’s effort after 32 minutes which failed to come anywhere close to threatening the goal.

The home fans were on their feet celebrating what they thought was the opener six minutes before the break, only for Mbokoma’s effort to be ruled out after the linesman had flagged for offside.

The Chilli Boys came desperately close to taking the lead after 54 minutes but it took a wonderful save from Ronwen Williams to keep out another effort from the on-form Mbokoma.

It was then Matsatsantsa’s turn to attack as Thabo Mnyamane was gifted possession after a mistake by the keeper, only for the attacker to send his chip sailing over the crossbar.

The home fans finally got the breakthrough they craved 19 minutes from time as Keagan Ritchie conceded a penalty, picking up a second booking and subsequent red card to boot, with Manzini stepping up to fire home from the spot.

The floodgates opened from there with Manzini grabbing his brace with seven minutes remaining, heading home from Andile Mbenyane’s free-kick.

The forward wasn’t done yet and secured his hat-trick in second-half injury time, slotting home with his right foot to leave the advantage with Chippa.
