The Brazilians’ 2-1 victory over Ajax Cape Town midweek further extended the gap over their rivals at the summit as they look a strong bet to take league honours this season, yet Mosimane says his priority lies beyond the realms of domestic football as he begins to prepare his squad for their upcoming CAF Champions League campaign.
“As much as we are fighting to try and win the Premiership‚ we are also in a preparation period for the Champions League that starts in six weeks’ time,” he said.
“Our programme is not the same as any ordinary team in the PSL. We have a different programme that is complex and we will start again to have those games in hand [to catch-up due to CAF commitments].
“We are preparing for Champions league now, and we are fighting to win the league, so our objectives are different‚ that is why this [the January transfer window] is the time to sign players for us‚ not in June.”
Speaking about the transfer window, Mosimane insists he has a small squad in which everyone is involved, but admits he needs to strengthen should Downs want to put up a fight on the continent once more.
“We have a small squad‚ everybody knows Sundowns as having big numbers‚ but we don’t,” he said.
"We have 24 players and that is why everybody has to play … there is no player that has not played.
"That is why we brought Aubrey to come in now and we have to bring in three more.
“If we have a squad of 24 again‚ I am happy‚ which means some of the players will obviously have to leave now.
"But you can’t let the players go if you don’t have those who you wish should come in.
“The squad we have now is okay to fight and win the league here, but it’s not strong enough for the Champions League – we need a stronger team.”
