Bucs one game from emulating Chiefs

Orlando Pirates’ impressive run under coach Josef Zinnbauer now sees them just one match away from equalling Kaizer Chiefs’ record run this season.

Pirates have been showing strong signs of resurgence under Zinnbauer, having won four games on the trot to climb up to fourth position on the Absa Premiership log.

They currently sit 12 points adrift of Chiefs, who lead the log by a 10-point margin over second-placed Mamelodi Sundowns, and their form has seen them edge closer to their Soweto rivals.

The Buccaneers, in fact, last suffered defeat to Amakhosi on 9 November last year and are now eight matches unbeaten in the league.

Ernst Middendorp’s charges hold the record for the longest unbeaten run this season, with their run of nine games without defeat between 14 September 2019 and 4 January 2020.

Sundowns, meanwhile, saw their longest unbeaten run this season end at seven games between 3 August and 23 October 2019, before suffering a 2-0 defeat to The Glamour Boys four days later.

The Brazilians, however, still hold the overall record for the longest unbeaten run of 28 matches between 20 January 2018 and 29 January 2019 – running across both the 2017/18 and 2018/19 seasons.

The Bucs will be hoping to emulate Chiefs when they visit Chippa United at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Saturday (18h00) as Zinnbauer looks to pick up his sixth win in seven matches since taking over from Rhulani Mokwena.
