Jonevret: I wasn't there for 6-0

The Bucs were clobbered 6-0 back in February in a humiliating defeat that accelerated the search for a new coach appointment, with Jonevret arriving just over a week later.

The popular clash pitting the 1995 African champions against the reigning kings of the continent is at Orlando Stadium on Sunday afternoon (15h00).

“I wasn’t there,” responds Jonevret.

“I cannot talk about what happened in the past, that you have to talk about with other coaches or people in the tribune. I can only talk about the time that I have been here. You have to ask the players about that but of course we want to win every game. For the Sundowns game I think there is going to be a little bit more people at the arena and it is going to be a party and I hope that we are ready for that,” he says.

Augusto Palacios was in charge of that fixture but the embarrassment and the chaos that happened then cannot just be ignored.

“This is a new game and the referee will blow the whistle to start the game but we know that we will be playing against a good team. For a home game I hope that we can be a little bit more shoulders down and go out and play because I see every day in training and even in the warm-up, we are good in possession, we keep the ball and everyone wants to have it. I hope we go out there and play some football because we should not be the team that kicks long balls even if [Thamsanqa] Gabuza is strong there but that is the way I want to have it.

“We have to create more chances and crosses and not give the ball away a little too often. We work every day and try to be better every day. We are in the top eight now and it is up to us of course but we still have a lot of tough games to play, we know that as well. I want them to relax a little bit more now and go out and show that they are good footballers because sometimes they do it but I want them to do it a little bit more often,” says Jonevret.

Based on what he has seen through the dozen games that he has been in charge Jonevret feels he has already identified areas that need attention in his team.

“I have thoughts about things that can be better but I don’t want to discuss those things now,” he notes.
