Pirates’ keeper merry-go-round goes on

Premiership

And Mpontshane took his chance well by keeping a clean sheet as The Buccaneers finally ended their winless run in the league that stretched back to November.

With all other three keepers in the squad used already this term in the league,  Felipe Ovono (one game) , Brighton Mhlongo (14) and Jackson Mabokgwane (six), Mpontshane (one) will hope to retain his place to the end of the season.

Such has been the line of blunders made by Bucs’ keepers that Ovono had his chance early on in the season and made horrendous errors, then came Mhlongo wih his blunders followed by Mabokgwane, who also contributed with howlers of his own.

That has forced the club to bring in Nigerian goalkeeper at Emmanuel Daniel, who was signed in February in the hope of bringing stability to a goalkeeping department.

For long considered as a mere back-up option since his arrival at Pirates from Platinum Stars in January 2015, Mpontshane’s only other appearances this season have been in the Nedbank Cup against EC Bees and Free State Stars.

The last two clubs to hand four keepers league starts in a single were Mamelodi Sundowns and Free State Stars during the 2014/15 season.

Sundowns used Kennedy Mweene (15), Denis Onyango (12), Wayne Sandilands (2) and Thela Ngobeni (1).

Stars had Daouda Diakite (6), Johnny Mathole (6), Ayanda Mtshali (12) and Glenn Verbauwhede (6) guarding the posts for them.
